Taoyuan Airport has been investing in the construction of an intelligent airport and continuously promotes its digital transformation. On December 30, 2021, the results of its intelligent service pilot program were put on display. For this project, the Taoyuan Airport along with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and five companies developed the following applications:

  • 5G Immersive Experience and Innovation
  • Passenger Positioning in the Terminal
  • Outbound Crowd Flow Analysis
  • Airside Personnel Activity Positioning

These applications aim to improve service quality and operational efficiency. Through digital construction efforts like these, the airport is well positioned to transform into a smart airport.

QCT and its partner HwaCom Systems jointly created an immersive exhibition and performance for audience of all ages, creating a virtual artistic space so that airport passengers can experience Taiwan’s cultural scenery through illustrations. The scenic tour travels through Taipei 101, the Pingxi sky lanterns, Sun Moon Lake, Alishan, Tainan, and other well-known landmarks, the local customs and cultures are integrated into it, and the whole experience is like looking through the pages of a Taiwan picture book. The 5G enabled experience can also be combined with businesses around the airport to form digital platforms that benefit both passengers and businesses. Through the use of AR goggles, immersive experiences were enabled by QCT’s private 5G network. Not only did this allow adult visitors to the airport terminal to see external digital landscapes, but children could also enjoy the fun experience of an imaginative interactive journey through multi-level visual interfaces that could also be educational.

This 5G immersive experience was supported by QCT’s OmniPOD Enterprise 5G solution, which was composed of Omnicore (5G core), OmniRAN (radio access network) and OmniView (operations and management system). Featuring high speed, agility, flexibility, availability and security, OmniPOD has been successfully deployed in Quanta’s smart factory and a famous local headlight assembly to enable Taiwan’s first 5G SA n79 deployment and it has also passed ITRI’s validation for 5G open networks.
