Unprecedented 42-Node Density Debuts in Quanta’s Newest Ultra-Dense Microserver
SAN FRANCISCO – September 4, 2013/PRWeb/ – Armed with an industry-leading density of 42 nodes per server, Quanta’s next-generation microserver was unveiled today, powered by the newest extreme low power Intel® Atom™ C2000 product family, codenamed Avoton.
Quanta QCT, a leading manufacturer of server, storage and network products for cloud-ready datacenters, unveiled the S1M microserver today at a launch event for the Intel® Atom™ C2000 product family in San Francisco. The S1M is the latest result of a long-term collaboration between Quanta and Intel.
At today’s launch event, Intel also demonstrated the first fully operational disaggregated rack, built by Quanta based on Intel’s Rack Scale Architecture concept. Two Quanta S1M servers and Intel® Xeon® E5 processor based systems with disaggregated storage in the rack were connected with Intel’s breakthrough Silicon Photonics Technology, a super-high bandwidth interconnect, highlighting the benefits of Rack Scale Architecture to cloud datacenters.
The S1M microserver system has several innovative design features:
1. Quanta Patented “Hidden-Shelf” Chassis Design: The microserver offers two rows (shelves) of server sleds, with 24 in the front shelf and another 18 in the ‘hidden shelf’ behind it, for a total of up to 42 microservers in a 2OU (Open Rack Unit) chassis. All 42 server nodes in this ultra-density design can be easily accessed and serviced from the cold aisle. Thanks to its unique “cable chain” design, every node is hot-swappable.
2. Open Rack Form Factor: Open Rack is a new server standard proposed by the OCP (Open Compute Project), which offers energy savings, thermal efficiency, high density and improved serviceability, making the S1M ideal for hyperscale datacenters and other cloud-ready datacenters.
3. Built-in 1+1 Redundant Hot-swappable Intel® Ethernet Switch FM5224: The long-term collaboration with Intel also resulted in Quanta adopting the Intel® Ethernet Switch FM5224, which aggregates all networking traffic among the 42 server nodes and provides two high bandwidth 40Gb/s Ethernet as its uplink connection. This results in the industry’s first Intel Open Network Platform utilizing a 2.5 GbE high-density, low-latency, SDN-enabled Ethernet switch developed specifically for microserver systems. This innovation also improves cable management in the rack.
In addition, the S1M includes dual redundant Chassis Management Modules. This flexibility allows datacenter operators to control all devices from one access point, helping out customers get the most benefit when transitioning to microserver architectures.
Availability for sample units of the S1M series microserver systems will begin in the fourth quarter of 2013 in the United States. Mass production is targeted for the first quarter of 2014.
“Quanta has led the industry in application of thoughtful engineering to solve real problems in the cloud ready datacenter. Density, power efficiency, cooling innovation, performance per watt/dollar, and exceptional CAPEX and OPEX performance are hallmarks of Quanta innovation. The Quanta S1M is the undisputed new leader in that quest.”
